As it now stands, the Super Eagles are condemned to beat Bafana Bafana in South Africa in September if they hope to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, according to coach Eric Chelle.

Bafana Bafana lead Group C with 13 points after six mathes, six points clear of the Super Eagles with four rounds of matches to the end of the qualifying series to the 2026 World Cup.

“It’s an obligation we win in South Africa, but the most important match for us right now is Rwanda in Uyo,” Eric Chelle told SCORENigeria.

“South Africa are a good side, but for that game we cannot afford to allow them play.

“But first we have to beat Rwanda at home and then we will focus on the game in South Africa.”

In June 2024, the Super Eagles under Finidi George forced South Africa to a 1-1 draw in Uyo courtesy of a well-taken equaliser by Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

Eric Chelle led Mali to outclass South Africa 2-0 at the group stage of the 2023 AFCON in a game that was dominated from start to finish by the Eagles from Bamako.

The Super Eagles coach further stated that he has been most impressed with the intensity, high-pressing and fighting spirit he has brought to the team and believes they are now on the right course to glory.
