2023 polls: INEC thumbs up Edo-based journalists over coverage

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Edo state has commended journalists in the state for its professional coverage of the recently concluded presidential, national and state assembly elections.

The state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr. Obo Effanga, made the commendation on Friday during a “Post Election Meeting with the Media” held at the INEC office in Benin City, the Edo state capital.

Effanga, who described journalists as “critical stakeholders in election processes,” said the meeting was to “say thank you to the media and listen to you on areas we could improve.”

He said, “We conducted the elections in the best way we could based on the law. I had no interest in any of the candidates or political parties. Though there were few protests, the majority of the protesters don’t even know why they are protesting.

“Whenever politicians win, they will say the victory is for democracy, but when they don’t, they criticise the process.”
