The Yoruba Patriots Movement (YPM) and Afenifere, a Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Wednesday declared that it is the turn of the South-west region to produce the next Nigerian president if crisis must be averted.
Addressing a press conference in Ibadan on the coming Yoruba summit slated for January 21 tagged; “Yoruba nation yesterday, today and tomorrow,” YPM National Coordinator, Mr Oladosu Oladipo, stated that this is because Nigeria constitution only recognises three regions of North, West and East.
According to Mr Oladipo “Obasanjo represented Yoruba, Jonathan had done for the East while Buhari is doing the slot of the North,” and that the All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders and members should honour the pre-2015 elections agreement to ensure fairness and equity.
He emphasised that anything aside the Yoruba president in 2023 will not be tolerated by the South-west region, saying, “You cannot be a good Nigerian without being a good Yoruba man.
“Our fair share must be given to us in Nigeria. This summit is not partisan but political. It is our turn to produce president in 2023. Obasanjo ruled for eight years, which represented Yoruba and Jonathan represented Igbo and Buhari is now representing the North. Our constitution only recognises the three regions in Nigeria.”
Oladipo said “in fairness, power should return to the West. Aside that, there will be serious problem in Nigeria. You may note it. Every freedom fighter is hooligan. We sowed and we must reap. Buhari himself had said the pre-2015 pact must be honoured.”
Also speaking, Secretary General of Afenifere, Mr Bayo Aina, said “the people have realised that it is only the All Progressives Congress (APC) that can give Yoruba candidate a ticket.
He pointed out that Yoruba people are ready to support a candidate from the region, regardless of the political affiliation, as “a Yoruba candidate is the only solution to Nigeria problems.”
