2019: SDP, CNM in talks

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Coalition of Nigeria Movement (CNM) initiated by former President Olusegun Obasanjo are currently in talks with a view to coming together to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the main opposition the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 general elections.
This development was confirmed by new entrant into the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prof Tunde Adeniran, who also said the party is bubbling with confidence that more people are soon to defect from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into the SDP.
The former Minister of Education and one-time Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany, who described the SDP as the rave of the moment, was upbeat that the party will soon receive many more new entrants that would make the party thick.
Accordingly, he rival parties that have had serious issues with internal democracy will have themselves to blame because the SDP has become the preferred destination of genuine lovers of democracy.
The former aspirant for the PDP national chairmanship seat who defected a fortnight ago following his displeasure with the conduct of the national convention that brought Prince Uche Secondus into office, said the SDP has been strategising for the 2019 general elections.
To this end, he said talks are in advanced stage between the SDP and the Coalition of Nigeria Movement (CNM) for a possible alliance ahead of the 2019 polls.
“We expect more people to join the SDP from other political parties and various platforms in view of its determination to be guided by some fundamental principles, policies and people-oriented programmes.
“We also expect an influx based on its ideological orientations.
As for 2019, we are consolidating on these values to give us a footing for necessary planning and preparations”, he said.
Adeniran said some aggrieved members of the PDP in particular are willing to decamp to the SDP to realign forces against the APC and the PDP in the forthcoming general elections.
Further, it was learnt that the SDP intends to take advantage of the rift between the leadership of the PDP and some aggrieved members by wooing the later to defect to the SDP and thus further weakened the main opposition ahead of the 2019 polls.
“The SDP is already reaching out to these people and preliminary talks have been very fruitful.
Apart from those who got angry at the conduct of the PDP convention, there are those who were sidelined long before the exercise.
“What about those who exhausted their energy and resources for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and are now stranded politically? We want to bring them back to the home of democracy where no one is too rich to make others hearers and not doers,” a source said.
