2015: US pledges support to INEC, police for peaceful polls

The United States of America (US) yesterday said it would provide adequate support to Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Nigerian Police to conduct free, fair and credible elections in 2015.
The US Consul General, Mr. Jeffrey Hawkins, who stated this in Asaba, capital of Delta state, said the United States was committed to save Nigerian democracy.

He said: “I want you to know that the United States is committed to supporting free, fair, transparent, inclusive, and peaceful elections in Nigeria.
“We are supporting important of non violent campaigns such as down in the creeks initiatives and the votes and not fight campaigns, both of which seek to inspire Nigerians of all ages but, especially youths to choose peace and proportional method over violence.”

He said the sponsorship of violence and intimidation, or even the threat of such actions, are utterly unacceptable in a democratic society, and need to be expunged once and for all. Drawing on or threatening violence in an attempt to garner an advantage over an opponent or in retaliation against another’s misconduct severely undermines the democratic process for the benefit of only a small few, and to the detriment of many.

“I come with an important appeal. I ask all of those in Delta state, aspirants and supporters alike, to pledge to promote peaceful participation the 2015 elections and beyond and to stand against violence before, during, and after elections.
“I remain an optimist when it comes to Nigeria’s future and hope that the next few months will prove to Nigerians and the world watching, just how committed Nigerians are to ensuring stability and long lasting democracy. I implore every Nigerian to do his or her part to ensure expectations are met.”
