Nigeria Union of Journalists, Zone A, has cautioned politicians to guard against their utterances and desist from inflammatory talks capable of tearing the nation apart and imperil the peace and unity of the country ahead of the 2015 general elections.
The NUJ Zone A that comprises the Councils of the Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states, said this in a communiqué issued by its Secretary, Shehu Ahmad, and issued to journalists in Kaduna at the end of its regular meeting chaired by the Zonal Vice President, Dangaladima Haidara Suleiman.
The NUJ zone A urged northern state governors to address the issue of street begging, destitution and other social vices that had become cankerworm in the states to drawback the development of the north.
The meeting also expressed concern over the increasing rate of rape cases in the Zone and called on lawmakers within the Zone to emulate the Katsina state House of Assembly by enacting laws that would curtail the menace.
“The Zone in session condoled with the family, people and government of Kano state over the demise of the late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, describing him as “one of the strong pillars of the NUJ.”
It also expressed shock over the death of the immediate past president of the NUJ, Mr. Ndagene Aku, and condoled with the Rivers state Council, the National Secretariat and the entire membership of the NUJ over the great loss.”
The NUJ zone A commended the government of Kano state for releasing the sum of N23 million for the total rehabilitation of the Kano state NUJ press centre.
It also commended the efforts of the governments of Kano, Katsina, Kaduna and Sokoto states in supporting their respective councils to a befitting Press Centre and charged other states in the zone, where the Union has no office accommodation to consider the role of the journalists in the development of their states and provide them with a press centre.
