Over 200 prospective students of tertiary institutions in Osun state were weekend given education grant by the executive director of Marine and Operations at the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA), Olalekan Badmus.
He presented cheques of N100,000 to each of the 30 prospective students of tertiary institutions who scored over 200 in their Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), while others got lower amount and education materials.
Badmus had obtained JAMB form for over 200 students under the auspices of Ilerioluwa Education Support Scheme and 30 of them who scored over 200 were given the grant.
He stated that the purpose of the scheme was to give back to the society and particularly to support the youth in order to make them succeed in their academic career.
Speaking with Blueprint correspondent, Badmus said: “I am also a beneficiary of this engagement, with my leader and mentor, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, who has built a lot of us.
“The only way we can spread this goodwill he has done is by giving back to the society and it is in that view that the Ilerioluwa Education Support Scheme for admission seekers started four years ago.
“This is the fourth edition. We started by paying for JAMB for beneficiaries. We have gone further by also giving grant to admission seekers who scored over 200 in JAMB.
“For this edition, over 200 students benefitted from the free JAMB form, for this exercise, those that got over 200 score in JAMB are 30 in number and they got grant of N100,000 each to support them. Others too were given grants.
“This is a way to encourage the youth and also encourage those that have the power and the will to do this, but they have not been able to push themselves. This is a time the society need those that have the opportunity to give back to the society.
“Since the programme started, we’ve been getting positive feedbacks. One of them is a Part 4 Medicine student at University of Ibadan, who is still benefiting from this gesture and many others,” Badmus said.
