2, 200 new licenses for boat operators, others underway – NIWA MD

A new set of 2,200 licenses for boat operators and training for 1,500 Skippers in the country’s waterways will be carried out before the end of 2024, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has disclosed.

The agency added that it is setting its target on the removal of five wrecks across the inland waterways in Lagos.

Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of NIWA, Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji explained that Lagos, being the hub of inland waterways activities in Nigeria, has already seen the deployment of five Patrol Boats to monitor activities on the State waterways.

He said “One of the targets I gave the Area Managers when I resumed is on increasing the number of navigable waterways that we currently have in this country.

“Nigeria has about 10,000 kilometers of waterways in this country, but anytime you search via Google, you will always find out that only 3,000 kilometers are navigable. I have given the Area Managers a target of increasing navigable waterways in Nigeria from 3,000 kilometers to 5,000 kilometers.
