15 coalition groups seek global intervention over Rivers crisis

Fifteen coalitions of civil society organisations and community groups have called for international intervention in Rivers state, Nigeria.

The coalitions are sounding the alarm on the deteriorating democratic situation in the state, where the recent impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara has raised concerns about the rule of law and the protection of citizens’ rights.

The convener, Coalition of Ijaw Stakeholders, Mrs Rosemary John-Oduone, at a press briefing in Abuja urged the international community, including the United Nations, the European Union, the African Union, and other global organisations, to take immediate action to protect Rivers state’s democracy.

The crisis in Rivers state has been escalating in recent weeks, with reports of human rights abuses, electoral manipulation, and suppression of dissenting voices.

The coalitions are warning that if left unchecked, the situation could descend into chaos, with far-reaching consequences for the entire country.
