One person was reported killed and four others are currently receiving treatment at different health facilities within the state following an attack allegedly launched by Fulani herdsmen yesterday at Laushi-Daji village, Billiril local government of Gombe state.
One of the victims, Dahiru Ajiya, who was hospitalised at Billiri General Hospital, told journalists that not less than 40 houses were burnt down by the attackers.
According to him, the incident took place Sunday evening when the Fulani herdsmen came in their hundreds leading their flocks trough their villages and destroying their farm products.
Ajiya said the first victim, who was also his brother, was killed a few metres away from his farm when he tried to confront the Fulani herdsmen.
Confirming the incident, the Emir of Billiri (Mai Tangle), Buba Maisheru, expressed worry, stating that the incident was an attack launched on the innocent peasant farmers in his area whose livelihood solely depended on farming.
The monarch, who said unless people learn to live in harmony despite their diverse cultures and background the much needed development, would be hard to achieve. According to him, traditional rulers in the state are working round the clock to ensure the people co-existed peacefully.
The member, representing Billiri east at the House of Assembly, Mr Rambi Ibrahim Ayala, spoke with journalists after going round the affected areas, said the communities needed the presence of security agencies to curb further attacks.
Ayala, who contributed relief items to the victims, also reiterated commitment towards ensuring peace, security of lives and property of the people through diligent performance of their legislative functions.
