’Why unity schools have mid-term break’

Ahead of the Nigerian presidential elections, students in federal government colleges, otherwise called unity colleges would proceed on a mid-term break from February 15, the government has announced.

That is a day for the presidential and National Assembly elections billed for the February 16.

Minister of Education Adamu Adamu made this disclosure Friday.

He added that the break would last till February 19.

The minister, who was speaking at the seventh edition of the ministerial news briefing in Abuja stated that it would afford parents the time to pick up and return their children, from and to school.

“Our students in unity schools are not of voting age but we adjusted the mid-term break to make it fall within the elections period.

“The essence of this break is to enable parents have maximum time to go and cast their votes and have the freedom to bring their children and wards back to school.

“Even if the child is not of voting age, the parent is of voting age. The break is only for presidential elections.

“There is no break for governorship elections,” he said.

Adamu also clarified that the development did  not affect other types of schools.

“This is for only unity schools in the country. We are not shutting down other schools.”

Nigeria’s 104 unity schools spread across the country, in forms of federal government colleges, federal government girls’ colleges and federal science and technical colleges.
