Rerun: IGP deploys 5 DIGs, 3 AIGs, 15 CPs


In a bid to ensure a hitch-free rerun elections, the acting Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Adamu,has deployed five Deputy Inspectors General of Police (DIGs), three Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs), as well as 15 additional Commissioners of Police (CPs) to provide supervision, direction and support to the existing security structure already in place in the affected states.

A press statement by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), ACP Frank Mba, Thursday in Abuja, disclosed that 796 suspects were arrested for various electoral offences across the country during the governorship and House of Assembly elections.

He said, “These latest arrests bring the total number of all the suspects arrested in the two last rounds of elections to 1,119.”

Mba named the DIGs deployed for the rerun elections to include: DIG Usman Tilli Abubakar depoyed to Adamawa state; DIG Yakubu Jubrin,  to Benue state; DIG Frederick Taiwo Lakanu to Plateau state; DIG Anthony Ogbizi Michael deployed to Kano state; and DIG Godwin C. Nwobodo deployed to Bauchi state.

According to him, “Out of the 15 additional CPs deployed, three each were deployed to Benue and Sokoto states, two each were deployed to Adamawa, Bauchi, Kano and Plateau states while Imo State got one.”  

He said the Police boss has directed the Zonal AIGs and their respective CPs in states where supplementary elections are taking place to ensure that adequate mechanisms are in place towards ensuring a safe and secure environment for the conduct of the elections. 

Mba said the Ag. IGP while commending the officers for their sterling performances in previous elections, charged them to remain patriotic, steadfast, professional, neutral and civil, but firm, in their conducts and actions during the make-up elections.

“He warned politicians not to undermine the electoral process by engaging in untoward practices such as snatching of ballot boxes, vote trading and violence of all kinds, stressing that violators would be made to face the full consequences of the law,” the statement said.     

The spokesperson further said IGP Adamu also enjoined the public to cooperate with security operatives,
