Anambra Govt set improved agro–farm markets in major cities


The Anambra state government says it has concluded plans to commence an agricultural programme billed to improve and develop the state Agro-farm market in major cities across the country, starting with the Anambra.

The Commissioner for Agriculture, Mechanization, Processing and Export, Mr. Afam Mbanefo, who disclosed this at stakeholder’s workshop on knowledge sharing organised by the State Coordination Office of Federal Government of Nigeria/International Fund for Agricultural Development Value Chain Development Programme (FGN/IFAD VCDP) for farmers in Awka, hinted that the programme shall kick-off by June, 209.


He stated that the Ministry was working closely with National Agency for Food & Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and other regulatory agencies for global acceptability of Anambra state agricultural produce, as well as networking processors and fabricators for increased value chain in rice and cassava farming.

On his part, the state programme Coordinator, FGN/IFAD/ VCDP, Mr. Nnamdi Agwuncha said the agency will assess the state’s level of implementation, address some challenges, give correction where necessary and as well see some implemented sustainability measures.

Mr Agwuncha, however, regretted that over dependency on grant by farmers was one of the challenges facing the programme.

Also speaking, a Senior Standard Officer Two, Standard Organizations of Nigeria (SON), Mr Monday Mbam identified constructive Agric education, good land reforms, irrigation facilities, transportation and others as ways of achieving enhanced agricultural activities.


The knowledge sharing workshop which attracted various local farmers on rice and cassava from various participating council areas of the state, climaxed with the inspection of the exhibition and displaying various food commodities such, crayfish, maize, rice and cassava among others.
